Motorrading Thoughts

07.06.2008 @ 20:51:29

There are three kinds of motorbike riders. GS riders (like my self), the BMW/Harley/Goldwing tourist types who ride long miles, and Joel M. Vaughn who rides long miles on bikes not designed to go long miles. There are then a bunch of folks who use their bikes but don’t actually ride.

Deer season needs to have started yesterday. The only appropriate place for bambi to be is on my plate. All of the Prius driving, vegan diet promoting PETA card carriers can take themselves and their electric cars to California and roast when they get there. I saw at least a 1/2 dozen deer on OH-56, appearing more often as I got closer to OH-664 this evening.

When I see a group of crotch rocket riders not in the parking lot of Taco Bell at OSU, I immediately think of the following things:

1) WTF is the point of having a helmet that is clipped to the side of the bike?

2a) I hope they are not covered by my medical insurance company.

2b) I hope they are not covered by my motorcycle insurance company.

3) How can I get these idiots way up in front of me so I don’t have to worry about them making some moronic pass of me as a group in the twisties.

Moving on, taking OH-56 and OH-664 from Athens to Logan rather than taking US-33 to do the same thing results in traveling slower than 25 mph. It took approximately 75 minutes to do that part of the trip tonight, and aside from seeing bambi on a few to many occasions along with the bloody idiots on their rice rockets it was darn near perfect.

Around and around the web we go

07.03.2008 @ 12:28:24

Q: what does our brand stand for? A: what does our space feel like? :: Diego really hits this on the head. It’s interesting how much walking in the door can tell you about what a company stands for, what it’s people are like and what the products are going to be about.

In the Autoblog Garage: 2008 Porsche Cayman S :: I had met a few guys back in Sebring who had Cayman Ss. They absolutely loved them.

The D3, D700 and Canon :: I’m still using my Canon 10D. It get’s the job done. And when I do make camera investments, I try to put them into glass. It is much more reliable than the bodies (also why I’m going to be with Canon for a long time).

Motive drives the new 911 :: Hammond has one. May recently bought one.

The Ancient Right: Heller affirms the Second Amendment. :: "The right to self-defence is the first law of nature: in most governments it has been the study of rulers to confine the right within the narrowest limits possible." ~Blackstone’s Commentaries

Commento del Pilota: David Jeffries on the Isle of Man TT :: "What we see here is something akin to a highly-trained and exquisitely practiced concert pianist taking us through a Rachmaninoff sonato seamlessly, all from memory and without a single technical error or lapse of expression. To go on a lap with Jeffries is to understand flow and its importance."

iPhone 101: Eight 3G iPhone Plan Pricing Details You Need to Know :: at&t holds the iPhone 3G for ransom.

Where’s Smeato when you need him? :: Multi-culti BS if you ask me.

Courting the Future :: The Supreme Court decisions constructed (or pulled from thin air) by justices nominated in the next four years will echo for generations.

America’s Worst Justice: Kennedy fashions himself an instructor to the nation. And he is — in the arbitrary ways of judicial lawlessness. :: Example of "pulled from thin air" as stated above.

How I hate the word "vibrant" :: Does it really matter if your community is a multi-culti zoo or not?

The 11 Best Foods You Aren’t Eating :: yum.

Imagining the Election :: "McCain must also feel like the mythical Menelaus, who tried to wrestle with the malleable Proteus, the sea god who turned into all sorts of different creatures to evade capture. Each time McCain thinks he can catch hold of Obama, the agile senator changes shape and slips away."

Vindicators of the Declaration :: For all of those people who keep spouting off about patriotism, why don’t you read about a true patriot, George Washington.

Big Oil Chutzpah :: John Kerry once again working his Waffle House magic, this time on oil policy.

Does Patriotism Matter? :: Patriotism means teaching our children that they have a duty to defend their country against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

Hoodies + global warming Updated

06.30.2008 @ 13:27:20

It’s 16:23 (4:24 p.m.) on the last day of June. I’m sitting in my office in the second floor of my apartment with the windows open. I’m wearing my hoodie because there is a slight chill in the air.

I take a sip of coffee and contemplate this intersection of time and temperature. I then ask, "Algore, what is this global warming of which you speak?"

Editorial Correction :: Sara Gallaugher is a conservationist who is concerned with non-politicized issues surrounding the environment. She has not mentioned "global warming" and I apologize for making that indication.

Around the web today

06.29.2008 @ 14:53:50

Yes, it’s messy, but toppling Mugabe may be the only option :: This one really is worth reading. It pretty much sums up why I do not want to see American troops engaged in the likely morass a peace-keeping mission cluster-fuck would become. No American troops in Zimbabwe unless they get to bring all of the tools in their toolbox short of tactical nuclear weapons along with the authorization to liberally employ them. Cluster bombs, landmines, AC-130 Spectre gun-ships, incinderary grenades, and the rest of the kit.

Dante’s new hell: my work canteen :: Designed by Guardian readers, for Guardian readers, it’s a riot of impenetrable symbolism, concrete and sharp designer fountains, which would be arousing if you had mad hair and a degree in environmental poetry from a fair-trade, organic peace workshop in Hackney.

Obama Supporters Take His Name as Their Own :: Remember, when engaging zombies only headshots count.

Beeswax :: Beeswax is an information management system inspired by Lotus Agenda. It aims to recreate Agenda’s flexibility and efficiency in a clutter-free, text-based (ncursesw) user interface with vi key bindings. Beeswax views & reports will have specifications for sections, columns, filtering, and sorting.

Recursive

06.27.2008 @ 18:31:51

One of those days where every thing that needs accomplished opens up a sub-task list of 10 things all of which contain 10 things and on where the only visual I can think of is putting a to-do list between two mirrors facing each other.

On the eTask list stuff... I’ve started to port my brain over to TaDa Lists.

And on the iPhone debate... I’m interested to see what the Samsung Instinct gets from the reviewers. I’m hesitant to leave the various discounts and such I’ve gotten from Sprint over the years.

That said, I think the iPhone should play nicely with dot Mac 2.0, and seeing how I’m locked into that part of the yearly Apple tax... There’s also the cost/value chart on what not forgetting things is worth when oil is $142 a barrel.

Back to sub-tasks of sub-tasks of sub-tasks...

Basement + Water = No fun

06.26.2008 @ 12:08:29

Apparently one or all of the intense storms last night contributed to water rising ~12 in in the basement. Might have been higher.

Lot’s of soggy cardboard. 1 broken glass. A swamped TV. A soggy stereo receiver. A drier that would function better as a washing machine. A very water logged printer. A slimey film-scanner. A hopefully drying out power saw and dehumidifier. Some very damp lumber and some now drying snowboard gear.

Not fun. And to think I live on top of a hill...

D.C. vs Heller

06.26.2008 @ 10:05:25

A few thoughts on today’s DC vs Heller decision by SCOTUS.

First, the reasoning behind the majority opinion was based on sound Constitutional interpretation along with careful examination of primary documents. It was not based on the individual justice’s feelings and beliefs, which is what the dissenting opion seems to be based on.

Secondly, when thinking about the term militia, can we, as American citizens, today think of it any less than writers of the Constitution did in light of recent events. When considering the unrest in the aftermath of Katrina, mid-west flooding, and other disasters the citizenry has consistently been the first line of defense and order against threats to the common good and common defense.

Dallas Morning News has a good summary of the ruling.

The official text of the SCOTUS decision.

And the Washington Post reports that Washington D.C. still doesn’t get it. I really liked how the City Council is expected to introduce legislation that all handguns must remain unloaded except in cases of self-defense. Looks, like lot’s of people will always be in "self-defense" mode.

Here’s to hoping that someone takes on Cook County, IL soon.

Batman, Barack, China, Girls and more

06.24.2008 @ 14:39:26

Dark Knight Director Shuns Digital Effects for the Real Thing :: Granted, I wanted to see this film after the bit with the Lamborghini in the trailer, but... golly, this isn’t your previous Bat-filmmaking.

The Mendacity of Hype :: Barack Obama and politics as usual, again.

10 Concerns about Barack Obama :: For being a Freshman Senator, Mr. Obama sure has shown plenty of reasons why he is not qualified to be President of the United States.

Another Surge Needed :: Support the Christians in Iraq. :: "But Christianity now faces extinction. The 1987 census recorded 1.4 million Christians in Iraq. Numbers began to drop as conditions deteriorated after the first Gulf War. There were, though, around 800,000 at the time of the U.S-led invasion of 2003. Of these, about half have now left the country altogether, while more than 100,000 are internally displaced persons."

Real Girl Power :: Taking spunky back. :: American Girls are respectable and desirable. Bratz are not.

MoveOn Terminates Its 527 :: The vast left-wing conspiracy. Timed to match Mr. Obama’s speech about not wanting affiliation with 527 organizations.

China’s Water Problems Reach Olympian Proportions :: Can someone explain why the US is not boycotting the Bejing Games?

Mock it up before you fsck it up.
